What species, quantities and sizes of marine organisms are allowed to be caught by amateur fishers?
Every amateur fisher is allowed to fish: • up to five (5) kilograms of fish or cephalopods (squids, cuttlefish, octopuses), per 24 hours, as long as he fishes with any of the permitted tools, except long lines, with which he is allowed to fish up to ten (10) kilograms, per 24hours. Excluded is the case where a single fish has a greater weight than that. • a single individual of the genus Epinephelus • without a fishing vessel the amount of the fisheries per day and during the permitted for these species fishing seasons, can come up to thirty (30) individuals per species such as the live bait species Ophelia bicornis (sand worm), Pattelaspp (butterfly) and Paguridea (catchimamal, flounder, red-footed, purple, flounder, scalcinii). As long as there is a use of a fishing vessel, fishing is allowed for up to sixty (60) individuals per species, per day and per fishing vessel of the above marine organisms.(NOTE: Sandworm is prohibited from February 1 to May 31 smaller than 5 cm. Butterflies from April 1 to May 31 smaller than 3 cm and the rest from May 1 to August 31 smaller than 5 cm). • octopuses weighing more than five hundred (500) grams. • for all the fishers that are going to be on board, the total amount of catch for the sea urchins per day, can come up to: a) twenty (20) individual pieces. b) In case there is a use of a fishing vessel, the total amount of the sea urchins per day can come up to thirty (30) individual pieces. |
Is recreational fishing carried out from boats with a foreign flag allowed? ?
The Greek legislation and specifically the article 32 of the Degree Law 420/1970 (Government Gazette 27 A) as it was amended and in force, provides the following: • In the Territorial Waters of the Greek State, fishing is prohibited on vessels owned by the majority of third-country nationals, both in terms of nationality and ship ownership. According to Article 5 of Reg. (EU) 1380/2013, fishing within the territorial waters of Member States is limited until December 31, 2032 to fishing vessels flagged by the coastal state, ensuring that recreational fishing is conducted in a manner compatible with the objectives of the C. Al.P.. Consequently, only Greek-flagged vessels may carry out recreational fishing within territorial waters. Is the use of longlines from the shore, as well as the dropped longline hooks by remote controlled means allowed?
It is not allowed to use longlines from the shore, as well as to throw longline hooks by remote control, in accordance with the provisions of the article 2 prog. 1. b(1) of Presidential Degree 373/1985 (asapplicable).

Are the recreational fishers allowed to use an electric-powered mechanism for hauling a line?
Amateur fishers are allowed to use an electric mechanism for pulling a trawl – vertical, until the reform of the current legislative framework.

Which are the restrictions of recreational fishing after the abolition of licenses (boat/individual)?
The restrictions regarding recreational fishing remain in force, as provided by national and European legislation.

Is the fishery of the large pelagic fish (bluefin tuna - swordfish) allowed from recreational fishing boats?
Fishing for large pelagic fish is allowed only by professional fishing vessels that are holding the relevant ( and valid) special permit.

If I catch a bluefin tuna without having the relevant special permit what should I do?
If the tuna is alive, it has to be immediately released into the sea. In case the tuna dies during the release attempt, the Port Authority must be informed, so as to bind, seize and dispose/donate the fish for public beneficial purposes.

How old do citizens have to be in order to carry out recreational spearfishing?
According to article 3 of the Presidential Degree 373/85 (Government Gazette 131 A') as established, underwater fishing is allowed for a person aged 16 years old or older.

Is the use of the tool ΄΄pezovolos΄΄ allowed in amateur fishing?
According to Article 17 of Regulation 1967/2006, the use of trawl nets, purse seine nets, seine nets, boat dredges, motorized dredges, seine nets, seine nets and combination bottom nets is prohibited for amateur fishers, as well as the use of longlines for highly migratory species. The above provision does not include the tool ΄΄pezovolos ΄΄ and therefore its use is allowed in recreational fishing

Is it mandatory for the owner of the fishing vessel to be on board during coastal fishing?
All owners of a commercial inshore fishing vessel must earn a living from fishing, regardless their percentage ownership of the vessel. It is mandatory for at least one of the owners of the vessel to be on board for each fishing trip.

Is the use of remote-controlled or other type of hooking gear transport and release aids permitted in recreational fishing?
It is not allowed because variations of the permitted tools and fishing methods make the terms to exercise the activity more favorable and the recreational fishing more efficient and dynamic. |
Is the use of the net gear with the name ΄΄avoid lifter in recreational fishing allowed?
It is not allowed because it is an alternative variation tool of the already permitted abstinence tool and refers to the fishing tool "stafnokari".
